Sport at the service of peace and development

​In 1993, during Burundi's civil war, the athlete competed at the World Athletics Championships in Toronto. Upon receiving news of their parents' murder, the athlete decided to represent his nation, not ethnicity. He received a silver medal, marking the first time a Burundian rider reached the final. The athlete's story served as a model for youth, leading to the birth of the Amani Foundation, later the Charles Nkazamyampi Foundation.

Sport has emerged as a powerful tool for conflict prevention and resolution. The shared love for a game can put aside political or ideological differences, providing a neutral ground for dialogue and understanding. ​ ​ ​ ​

​Sport  serves as a potent tool for promoting gender equality and empowerment. Historically, women have faced numerous barriers in accessing and participating in sports. However, this initiatives aimed at increasing female participation, and have been successful in breaking down gender stereotypes and empowering women and girls. Sport enables women to challenge societal norms, build self-confidence, and develop valuable leadership skills, fostering gender inclusivity and equality within society.

Sport and Environment

​Sport has the potential to drive economic development by creating employment opportunities and stimulating local economies. Hosting major sporting events, such as the FIFA World Cup or the Olympic Games, often requires substantial infrastructure investments, generating employment and boosting local businesses. Additionally, sport-related tourism can provide a significant economic boost, attracting visitors from around the world and contributing to local development.

Sport and Education

​Sports can act as a catalyst for educational development by complementing formal classroom learning.
