On March 1, 2025, in Bisoro commune, Mwaro, the Charles Nkazamyampi Foundation had the honor of being invited to a symposium organized by the French Embassy to share its perspective on women's sports as a tool for social and cultural empowerment.
On this occasion, Charles Nkazamyampi, founder and Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, was present to share his expertise. As a former Olympic athlete with extensive experience in the field of sports, he provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities related to women's participation in sports in Burundi.
His speech was based on his commitment to young people from all backgrounds through initiatives that promote peace, inclusion, and sustainable development. He helped the symposium participants better understand the strategies and approaches that can break gender stereotypes in sports.
Through his journey and fieldwork, Charles Nkazamyampi demonstrated how sports can be a powerful driver of social transformation, fostering gender equality and women's empowerment across the country.
He emphasized the importance of raising awareness among families and local leaders in remote areas to support women's participation in sports. He highlighted the role of mixed-gender tournaments in promoting inclusion and equal opportunities.
He advocated for the integration of gender equality in school sports by involving local authorities and encouraging boys to become allies of this cause. He also stressed the need for institutional and policy engagement, calling for dedicated budgets, the creation of women's sports clubs, and the development of adequate infrastructure.
Finally, he underscored the necessity of including girls from disadvantaged backgrounds in sports activities in rural areas. According to him, these initiatives would turn sports into a powerful tool for equality and women's empowerment.
